In the world of project management, there are two basic roles: Project Managers and Program Managers. Project managers focus on individual projects as they arise, organizing teams, updating key stakeholders and keeping within budgetary guidelines one project at a time. Program Managers are similar to Project Managers, but focus on multiple projects simultaneously as well as the umbrella programs they fall under.
Program Managers work in different industries. They help define projects and determine the strategy. They also assist in implementation. They set the milestones, define budgetary guidelines, manage documentation and oversee communications between key stakeholders for each project's respective lifecycle. To best fulfill the role, they must be expert communicators, have a keen awareness of costs and timelines and be able to work with multiple teams routinely.
