Project Managers are responsible for every aspect of a given project's lifecycle, from the pitching and planning stages to development, testing, implementation and roll out, as well as ongoing monitoring post-launch. There are three main types of Project Managers: General Project Managers, IT Project Managers and Senior Project Managers. With more and more businesses expanding their IT capabilities, IT Project Managers have become increasingly important. As of 2015, there were over 340,000 IT Project Managers working in the U.S. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in this specific niche is expected to grow by 15 percent by 2024.
IT Project Managers have one of the most narrowly-defined roles under the Project Manager umbrella. They focus exclusively on information technology plans, including implementing new technologies across entire corporate settings. They often work with multiple teams, keeping deliverables on time and in budget. They frequently interact with outside vendors, acting as intermediaries between them and upper management. IT Project Managers must be expert communicators as well as able to work with multiple teams. Qualified candidates should have Project Management Qualification (PMP), experience in risk management and strategic planning, agility with project management software, outstanding communication and critical thinking skills, contract negotiation expertise.
