Security Engineer Job Description

Security engineers maintain the security of computer systems and networks within an organization. They create and implement strategies that prevent unauthorized access to internal networks, protecting sensitive information. Also known as information security analysts, these engineers work with IT teams to develop policies and plans for information security. They create best practices and security standards that enhance system protection, and teach others in the company to follow them. Security engineers install data encryption programs, firewalls and other software that protects organization systems, and use them to prevent hacking and other unauthorized access. Information security analysts work closely with other employees throughout the company, assisting them with the installation and use of security products. They also ensure each system user follows recommended procedures and protocols for improved protection. Security engineers are responsible for monitoring systems and networks for vulnerabilities, security breaches and intrusions. If these issues occur, they implement activities that respond to the intrusion and minimize the impact, then conduct forensic and technical investigations into how the event occurred, and determine the overall damage.

As the use of technology grows, the need for cyber security does, as well. Security engineer skills are in high demand throughout the US, UK and Ireland, with incredible growth potential. Candidates who possess skills in firewalls, intrusion detection, incident handling and response, access and identity management, and application security development are in high demand. According to research carried out by Indeed.com, the Information Systems Security Association and Enterprise Strategy Group, the need for cyber security professionals continues to grow throughout large and small organizations.
