Security Engineers are highly skilled technical professionals with a thorough knowledge of computer security solutions such as firewalls, anti-virus software and running vulnerability scans. Their primary duty is to keep all of the data of an organization safe from hackers and cyber threats. Along with creating, designing and installing computer protection systems, Security Engineers will also conduct periodic tests, code reviews and audits to identify potential weaknesses and vulnerabilities within a company's system. In this role, educational requirements will vary based upon the industry in which these professionals are working. Some organizations will look for candidates with a Master’s degree. Other employees may only require a four-year degree in computer engineering, information technology, computer programming or computer science.

Along with a formal education, Security Engineers will have mastery in programming languages such as Perl, Java, Python and C++. Advanced computer experience in cloud access security, public key certificates and IPsec suites is also an attractive attribute to have for this job. Soft skills like solid verbal and written communication strengths, as well as project management, organizational and time management abilities are imperative to being a successful Security Engineer. These professionals can be found working in hospitals or clinics to protect and keep patient data private. They might also be hired at financial institutions or governmental entities to secure information during transmission. Other potential employers include retailers, manufacturers, airlines and engineering firms. IT security, network security or cyber application security engineers are other related job titles for this role.
