NOC Engineer Job Description

A NOC engineer works in a network operation center (NOC). NOC engineers monitor large computer networks in a central location. They troubleshoot and try to solve network issues remotely whenever possible. If they are unable to correct an issue, a NOC engineer will follow protocols as determined by the company to resolve the issue. This may include calling in another IT team, notifying the customer, dispatching a technician to the site of the problem or calling in a third-party vendor. The role of the NOC engineer is in high demand as the telecommunications and IT industries continue to grow. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for computer support specialists, including NOC engineers, will increase by 12 percent by the year 2024.

A NOC engineer's daily responsibilities include monitoring network systems, troubleshooting problems that arise, tracking issues and recording how they were resolved and escalating any incidents to the proper manager or IT team if he/she can not resolve it on their own. The core skills that a NOC engineer should possess include experience managing and supporting IT infrastructures, knowledge of disaster recovery plans and procedures, familiarity with project management technology, good oral and written communication skills, an understanding of information architecture frameworks, the ability to manage time and multitask with minimal supervision and the ability to quickly and effectively diagnose network alerts and events. Additionally, some companies may require their NOC engineers to have advanced skills such as server hardware experience with Cisco UCS, HP or Dell blade systems. Prior help desk or customer service experience is also a plus.
