The Full Stack Engineer position is one of the most popular tech jobs in the United States. Popular as it may be, the role of the Full Stack Engineer is somewhat misunderstood in today's job market. The position is both technical and high-level, as it requires expertise in all stages of software development, from front to back end, as well as full knowledge of servers, networks and hosting environment, API and user interfaces and security concerns. The Full Stack Engineer also has to approach their myriad tasks by taking customer and company needs into account, bridging the gap between customer-facing applications and the programmers who create them.
As the role is incredibly diverse, Full Stack Engineers must possess a comprehensive skill set, including HTML/CSS, JavaScript and back-end languages, including Ruby, PHP and Python. As they must also work with databases and online environments, they should be well-versed in SQL and Node.js, the Azure data stack, web applications and know how to connect databases with their preferred back-end languages. Knowledge of best practices in both HTTP and REST, web application architecture (Amazon AWS/Heroku) and the use of Git/GitHub are essential.
