Structured Query Language (SQL) is the computer language used in the creation, operation and maintenance of databases. SQL programmers, also known within the industry as SQL developers, design and maintain computer databases. Computer databases are constructed in such a way that multitudes of data can be quickly searched and readily accessed. It is the purview of the SQL programmer to ensure that the design allows the user to locate all pertinent data.

SQL developers not only design and maintain database structures, they usually oversee the database once created as well. Having intimate knowledge of the database, the developer can respond to ad hoc requests when users are unable to find the data that they are looking for. It is not unusual for developers to be called upon to design new databases to meet the emergent needs of the company and users. As technology continues to evolve, older databases do not have the capability and speed possible with the new technology. In these cases, SQL developers may be called upon to transfer data from an old database to a newly created database of his or her design. The SQL Programmer is the resident expert on the database and is regularly called to action in support of those who need to access the database's information. Entry into the SQL industry generally requires a bachelor's degree in programming or computer science and sometimes SQL certification through an organization like Microsoft.
