Information technology seeks to aid computer technology needs within various other industries, such as government, healthcare, schools and business. Roles in this industry may also involve installing and customizing various computer hardware and software applications for these specific types of organizations.

Positions within the information technology field include desktop support specialists, help desk analysts, IT operations directors and IT auditors. Applicable degrees and certifications are often required, including a minimum of an associate's degree in a related field, network and hardware certifications and at least several years of experience and training. Skills may include comprehending and interpreting instructions, computing mathematical equations and expressions, analytical and critical thinking skills and customer service experience. Knowledge of network and systems administration, upgrades, tools and equipment may also be required. Depending on the role, a master's degree in computer science or accounting, as well as certification in the areas of A+, Apple, ACSP, MCSE and ACTC may also be required assets to succeeding in an information technology role. Multi-tasking and strong communication skills are also applicable skills within the information technology industry.
