One of many things that Boston has going for it is a strong economic development department that is actively working to attract and support many industries, including technology. With these efforts and other advantages, high tech manufacturing has experienced nearly 10% growth per year since 2010. Other high tech industries also have seen tremendous growth, especially software publishing which has grown nearly 160%. The other reason for this growth is Boston's talent pool. More than half of the labor force has at least a bachelor's degree and half of those majored in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, math). Popular employers in the area include HubSpot, TripAdvisor and Everbridge.
Boston is somewhat quirky in that it feels both like a city and small town. The historical merit of this town is not lost on residents with a 2.5 mile trail that meanders to 16 historical locations, including the site of the Boston Tea Party. Boston also has an energetic nightlife with everything from artsy clubs to swinging jazz clubs and sky-high bars. Grab some history at the oldest bar in America, The Bell in Hand Tavern, dating back to 1795. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the 2,300+ acre park system, including Boston Common, the oldest in the country. Getting around is mostly done by public transit and walking. In fact, more people walk to work in Boston than in any other city its size. The bike sharing system is also well utilized.
