Site Reliability Engineers use their expertise on computer programs and network systems and their variables from inception, ensuring all parts work as needed. Not only do these engineers make sure that systems and networks are functioning, but they analyze structures to attempt to prevent problems from occurring and disrupting networks and systems. An example of a typical project a Site Reliability Engineer may work on includes engineering cloud storage systems and developing the network needed for users to access this cloud storage system. After SREs contribute to designing and developing a product, they run tests to check that systems, applications and software are operating as needed to support the product. When an error occurs, Site Reliability Engineers contrive a specific strategy to address the issue, documenting every step for future use. Professional SREs often have a degree in computer science or engineering and have demonstrated programming aptitude. IT, communication and organizational skills are also beneficial to the role, as is a knack for problem solving.
