Developer Operations (DevOps) Job Description

Development Operations Engineers (also known as DevOps Engineers) are information technology experts who work in areas of software development, testing and program operations. As a part of a technical team, they help with automation building, code development and scripting. With today’s complex software applications, they must also deploy or test the program to ensure its compatibility with all operating systems. As a part of testing, the DevOps team must make sure the program runs smoothly without security risks. Other duties of the DevOps engineer will often include drafting technical documents, configuring management tools and managing software releases.

The Development Operations Engineer is not a novice. Instead, they are highly technical and skilled professionals with extensive experience in computer programming, data management, software development, automation and operation systems. Consequently, most DevOps engineers begin their careers as software developers, systems administrators or system engineers. A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology systems or electrical engineering is a great foundation or introduction into this field.

Development Operations Engineers must be team players who are able to communicate and work well with fellow technical experts as well as non-technical users. They will also need to be able to manage their time, work well under pressure and be quick problem solvers.

High-tech companies with software developers, database/applications companies and technology consulting firms all hire DevOps Engineers. Utilities companies and financial firms may also have a need for this skillset.
