Site Reliability Engineers are in a field that combines software and systems engineering in order to build and maintain large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. These systems must also have the maximum amount of uptime possible so that employees, users and clients can get the most out of them. Site Reliability Engineers, at a minimum, need to possess a four-year degree in computer sciences or one in mathematics or physics as well as be fluent in industry-standard languages such as C, C++, Java and Ruby.

Site Reliability Engineers will typically improve the entire lifecycle of a system from inception to design to development to operation to refinement. They must also be able to collect and analyze data so that problem areas can be identified and fixed. Strong communication skills along with the ability to write complex and efficient algorithms is a must as well.
