Engineering Managers are responsible for leading and supervising a team of engineers. They coordinate and direct operations, production and quality assurance tasks. These specialists help with the creation of solutions in order to resolve complex technical issues. They may aid in the management and placement of engineering services to outside vendors. Engineering Managers will also provide final approval of products being manufactured and consult with upper management. They will discuss with their team the project specifications along with detailed plans to keep everything on schedule and the budget to accomplish the task. Engineering Managers initiate procedures, standards and administrative policies. They also write performance reviews, as well as prepare bids and contracts. These specialists understand finance, accounting, Lean Sigma or Six Sigma, project management and information systems. They have strong communication, leadership, analytical, math and critical thinking skills. Engineering Managers usually possess a bachelor's in engineering and business or a MEM (Master of Engineering Management) degree. They may also have various forms of certification, such as a PEM.
