Data Engineers are responsible for optimizing data and the data pipeline architecture. They will work closely with data scientists, database architects, data analysts and software developers. Data Engineers are regularly asked to identify, design, and implement internal process improvements which could include automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, and redesigning infrastructure for greater scalability. Often data come from a variety of sources and must be combined. Data Engineers are required to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information technology, electrical engineering or applied math. More senior positions often require a Master’s Degree and certifications like Google’s Certified Professional or IBM Certified Data Engineer. Qualified Data Engineers should have experience working with relational databases, possess strong analytical skills and have a history of processing and extracting values from large disconnected datasets.
