Senior Principal Data Engineer- UI, Node.js, Scala, Spark, JVM

As our customers go about their daily lives, they generate a river of data. It flows 24 hours a day, touches all lines of business and represents a tremendous opportunity for Capital One. By accessing that data, we can develop real-time decision systems that provide anyone at Capital One the resources and infrastructure they need to innovate with our data. Our team is chartered to redefine how everyone at Capital One produces and consumes data. We are using open source and cutting-edge data streaming technologies while building custom experiences that humanize the creation and consumption of data. We are looking for a JavaScript/Node developer who also has experience in Scala. This developer must be familiar with Scala or willing to learn with some background in functional programming. We want a solid coders who excel with functional programming, and also has a deep knowledge of modern interactive UI development and modern tooling. We want a systems engineer who can code, mentor, and lead a team of developers.This developer should be Scala savvy, AWS savvy, have real experience Spark, Cassandra and/or DynamoDB, or other distributed systems.

As a lead UI engineer working on the data streaming platform and event hub, you will be on point for:

Writing code for applications that makeup our complex event processing framework, as well as writing automation for our cloud infrastructure - we write Scala use Terraform, and build on AWS

Designing and architecting new application infrastructure as our product expands.

Creating an engaging user experience to drive the adoption of our CEP platform

We are building a brand new platform - this is 'ground floor', 'greenfield' work.

Building self-healing systems by writing anomaly detection on top of monitoring data in InfluxDB, Cloudwatch, ES logs, Log aggregation, ELK, etc.

Experience with React, Vue.js, or equivalent is important as we plan on writing a UI as a single pane of glass for this internal IFTTT-like system which encompasses composes Lens, automating the serving layer of Big Data architecture, and more.

The resiliency of our AWS infrastructure, including Spark Streaming on EMR, HashiCorp Nomad on EC2, k8, and multiple managed services such as ElastiCache, RDS, ElasticSearch, DynamoDB.

You will be working on IFTTT style systems and automating the servicing layer of big data architecture.

Stream processing and CEP are key components of the big data reference architecture.

We aim provide an enriched, intelligent customer experience by serving up real-time insights and decision data.

To use insights and up-to-date events from stream processing and micro-services, we are working on automating the conversion from streams of data into operational data stores which get queried fast (low-latency) to make streams query-able by microservices and downstream stream processing (IFTTT-like, anomaly detection, etc.)

The aim is to enrich the customer experience in real-time by stream processing and micro-services (pushing the data and insights to where it it needed).

What you should bring to the table:

* Respect for others' ideas and willingness to share knowledge
* Willingness to embrace functional programming
* Deep systems engineering and JVM background
* A solid foundation in testing - building a reliable continuous integration pipeline shouldn't be new

Basic Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience
* At least 5 years of experience in software engineering
* At least 2 years of experience in functional programming
* At least 2 years of experience in Scala or Java
* At least 2 years of experience building UI with JavaScript frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

* 1+ year of experience in Site Reliability Engineering
* 2+ years of AWS experience
* 2+ years Terraform, CloudFormation and/or Ansible or equivalent background in automation
* 2+ years of experience with DevOps, CI/CD, git, SCM, design, systems engineering, mentoring, Agile
