Manufacturing involves creating merchandise through various forms of labor or machinery, including processing and formulation. There are many different types of manufacturing, including agile, flexible, just-in-time and lean manufacturing. Other areas of the manufacturing industry include mass production, prefabrication, packaging and labeling, rapid manufacturing and mass customization. Examples of materials that are made through manufacturing include lumber and wood, paper, petroleum, fabricated metal, apparel and electronic equipment, among many others.

Positions in the manufacturing industry may include industrial controls specialists, industrial designers, health and safety technicians, inspectors and industrial sandblasters. Skills in the manufacturing industry may involve communication and collaboration with team members and mentors, teaching applicable industry skills, multi-tasking, managing projects, problem-solving and knowledge of current computer software. A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited program is often required to succeed in the manufacturing industry. Several years of industry experience may also be required. Duties in the manufacturing industry often involve training and developing personnel, developing strategies, managing costs and margins of products and resources and processing and verifying sales orders. Flexibility, strong attention to detail, meeting deadlines, analytical skills and creating clear presentations are also required skills in the manufacturing industry. These roles also may involve either working independently, with business owners, team members or with supervisors. Additional certifications, such as visual modeling, may also be required depending on the job role.
