Data Engineer Job Description

A Data Engineer is responsible for building massive databases in order to hold and sort through large quantities of data. As such, many companies are very aggressive when it comes to searching out highly qualified candidates for this position. A bachelor's degree is often the bare minimum, however, a master's level in the appropriate field is usually required. At times, however, job experience may be a substitute for degrees. Because Data Engineers are required to sift through large amounts of data and use programs efficiently, they must also have a strong math background in addition to being able to program. Data Engineers must be able to not only build custom databases from the ground up, but they must also be able to interface well with other companies databases and pull the correct information as needed for their analyses.

Data Engineers will often be working with numerous other employees of company, and as such, they must be very good at sticking to schedules, so that projects and programs are completed in a timely manner and within budget. Also, engineers must possess very good communication skills and be able to think outside the box to tackle any number of problems and tasks that may come up. The future outlook for data engineers is quite good, and both demand and pay is expected to increase as time goes on.
