The Principal Architect functions as an individual contributor and knowledge expert both within and outside the organization, acting as the primary technical expert in Scripps' data platform, including data storage, data movement, data warehousing, data virtualization and business intelligence. Leads complex projects that span multiple disciplines and ensures the success of IT and business alignment. Perform large-scale IT program oversight. Contributes in the planning of the overall organizational IT strategy. Contributes to the overall health of the IT Portfolio. Develops "new to industry" solutions for complex projects. Participates in industry/knowledge reference groups.

Ideal candidate for the Principal Architect role, has a substantive development, engineering and multi-platform architecture background, and simultaneously a desire to lead, grow and develop a true enterprise analytics strategic vision. This individual develops strong, credible relationships with all levels of team members and customers, and promotes the technology roadmap strategically in a way that both business and technical teams can understand and support.

Responsibilities:

* Guide the overall enterprise data strategy for the Analytics team by creating, managing, and promoting the short and long-term analytics architectural vision that aligns with business goals;
* Establish and execute the vision and roadmap to drive the Analytics team forward technologically and strategically;
* Be the technical expert in Scripps' data platform, including data storage, data movement, data warehousing, data virtualization and business intelligence
* Provide technical leadership, oversight and guidance to the Analytics team operationally, ensuring standards and best practices are in place and being followed;
* Collaborate with other principal and enterprise architects in Information Services to align analytics to the broader enterprise technical roadmap;
* Evaluate, recommend and establish new and emerging data storage, movement and management technologies and practices;
* Ensure interoperability, scalability, performance and ROI of a cohesive system of infrastructure, data models, services and technologies that allow the Analytics team to produce high-value produce for customers enterprise-wide;
* Ensure compliance with data security and privacy standards and policies;
* Lead the development of conceptual, logical and physical data assets to execute on high-value enterprise initiatives and engages with project managers, data architects, business partners, and senior leadership to ensure optimal solution is designed to meet business needs;
* Function as principal Architect of a cohesive system of infrastructure, data models, services and technologies that allow the Analytics team to produce high-value produce for customers enterprise-wide;
* Translate industry technology direction to business value for key stakeholders;
* Advise during vendor selection and function as a critical component of build vs. buy decisions

This position will be at our newly designed, centrally San Diego located business services office, which offers an on-site café and gym. This is a full time, salaried position and offers Scripps Health's award winning benefit package along with relocation assistance to those that qualify.

Required Education/Experience/Specialized Skills:

* Bachelor's degree.


* 8 years of related experience in the data engineering/data architecture space


* Excellent critical and analytical thinking with excellent customer service skills.


* Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Advanced data infrastructure or analytic solution design skills.
* Excellent organizational and project management skills.
* Mastery of at least one, but thorough understanding of multiple disciplines such as operating systems, data virtualization, data lake technology, data warehousing methodologies, integration, software development, endpoint devices, security or cloud services.

Preferred Education/Experience/Specialized Skills/Certification:

* Education
* Master's degree




* Experience:


* Ten years' experience in a healthcare or IT Setting


* 2 years' experience defining and implementing strategies under an Assistant to the Vice-President (AVP) or equivalent;


* 2 years' experience defining and implementing strategies under an Assistant to the Vice-President (AVP) or equivalent;


* Experience in cloud-based architecture


* Experience in efficiently extracting data from a variety of source types, including multiple approaches for both batch and real time extraction;


* Experience with Big data services: Hadoop/HDFS, MapReduce, Spark, Hive, Cloudera Impala, etc.;
* Significant experience with Data Warehouse modelling (Kimball and Inmon design methodologies, additional methodologies a plus);
* Experience with a variety of database technologies (SQL, Oracle, NoSQL, etc.);
* Extensive experience with a variety of data movement technologies, both batch and stream-based;
* Experience with full, incremental batch and near-real-time data loading, fitting loads within small source windows and parallelization of loading data;
* Significant experience with integration and transforming data for specific use cases - de-normalization, partitioning, indexing of data models, data synchronization and understanding of tools and concepts regarding in-memory models and OLAP cubes in a big data environment;
* Extensive experience in the rapid promotion of solutions from prototype to production, monitoring the health and performance of those solutions and ensuring fault tolerance of the entire operational environment
* Specialized Skills:
* Mastery of multiple disciplines such as operating systems, data virtualization, data lake technology, data warehousing methodologies, integration, software development, endpoint devices, security or cloud services;




* Knowledge of standard connections like JDBC as well as high-speed proprietary connections like TPT;
* Both the ability and understanding of how to optimize performance of both individual data pipelines and the overall system architecture;
* Excellent critical and analytical thinking and excellent customer service skills;


* Excellent written and verbal communication skills;


* Advanced data infrastructure or analytic solution design skills;


* Excellent organizational and project management skills;
