A Gaming Engineer has the responsibility to develop, test and improve games that are played on computers, consoles and mobile devices. This vitally important position is part of an overall team of professionals that create new video games in a variety of genres. Because this is a technical field, a bachelors degree in computer science is often required. However, companies will many times accept equivalent work experience as a substitution.
Gaming Engineers work closely with other programmers, illustrators and testers across a variety of platforms. As such, strong communication skills are a must as well a strong programming skills. When it comes to programming languages, familiarity with the most popular industry-standard languages such as C#, Objective-C, Lua and Python is almost always a requirement as well. Depending on client and company needs, particular projects may need to be developed across a variety of platforms and thus a Game Engineer will need to be able to accomplish that task while staying on schedule and budget.
