The Optical Network Planner is a key part of the Viasat team, responsible for the detailed planning of network infrastructure to support our growing satellite fleet. This includes but is not limited to network topology planning for new builds and expansions, coordinating complex network implementations, identifying risks and evaluating alternatives.

* Design and plan fiber-optic network using both off-the-shelf and in-house developed design and analysis tools
* Plan routes for fiber-based networks based on engineering specifications and network architecture standards
* Drive discussions with network infrastructure providers to acquire route data and analysis of alternatives
* Collaborate with strategic negotiators and designers to compile and present project feasibility studies, and to acquire the assets needed to deliver the network
* Maintain detailed network documentation including topology, installation, build plans and equipment design
* Support network deployment and activation activities
* Contribute to the development of network monitoring and management systems
* Act as an escalation contact during outages, performing restoration and root cause failure analysis
* Occasional On-Call work required

Requirements

* Experience with use of fiber network design, planning and mapping software tools such as 3-GIS, ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS
* Telecom OSP experience with fiber optic networks related to mapping and GIS
* Strong written and oral communications skills with the ability to effectively communicate across the organization
* Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
* Familiarity with optical data transport technologies
* BA/BS degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
* U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency Required
