Hughes has an exciting opportunity for a Linux Systems Engineer with some Development Skills to work with our Big Data Infrastructure team.

This is an opening for a position with our emerging Big Data Infrastructure and Big Data Applications Development team. Qualified candidates with have a strong background in Linux System Administration and Bash scripting with moderate programming skills. No experience in any Big Data technologies is required, we will provide on-the-job and additional training in Big Data/Hadoop related technologies as required. This is very much a hands-on position and a successful candidate will possess a strong desire to enhance their existing Linux SysAdmin skills with more formal software engineering/code writing skills to enable them to build high quality application architectures using automation and modern tool sets.

This position will be located at our headquarters in Germantown, MD.

There will be ample opportunity to grow technical skills as the environment expands and new challenges are presented for scale and constantly changing technologies.

Responsibilities

* Overseeing the deployment of new systems including coordinating with infrastructure, network, and security teams.
* Write automated (Python/Bash/Ansible) programs for installing applications, libraries, and services on CentOS and/or RHEL systems.
* Expand our integration into the Monitoring as a Service platform by ensuring the Big Data platforms are highly available.
* Participate in the build-out of new Big Data analytics applications as the candidate's software development skills evolve.
* Augment your existing Linux/Bash skill set's with formal Software Development skills to further your ability to support the team.
* Work with API interfaces and data formats such as REST, JSON, and SQL.

Basic Requirements

* 3+ years of Linux System Administration experience; preferably on CentOS and/or RHEL
* 3+ years experience writing Bash scripts
* 1+ year of programming in Bash and Python

Preferred Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Analytics, or related field
* Basic programming skills with good understanding of modern data structures and reporting tools
* Experience administering a production Hadoop cluster; preferably Hortonworks but other distributions or roll-your-own is acceptable
* Have a strong desire to augment existing Linux/Bash skills with formal software development skills
* Be inquisitive - have a strong desire to learn what you don't yet know, to build up new skills to help you achieve success at tasks you will be responsible to perform
* Be self-directed - take on new tasks, do research as needed to fill in knowledge gaps, and solve problems without needing a lot of support
* Be adaptable/teachable - be willing to adapt to our practices, but also be bold enough to make your case for a better way when you believe you have a good idea
* Good understanding of working in a DevOps style of workplace including working within the Atlassian set of tools (Bitbucket, Jira, Confluence)
* Familiar with Agile-style develop practices (Scrum/Kanban)
* Basic understanding of databases and use of SQL
* Experience with Git
