A Full Stack Engineer must have strong knowledge of the various layers of software development. In many companies, a Full Stack Engineer is also expected to have a deep understanding and technical expertise in many different areas. Some of the common expectations of a Full Stack Engineer include an understanding of frontend scripting languages such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS. They should also know how to code in Ruby on Rails, PHP and SQL. A Full Stack Engineer may also need familiarity with different database technologies like MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL and MongoDB. In many cases, Full Stack Engineers should have knowledge of web server technologies like ISS, Apache, Nginx and J2EE.

While specific tasks vary, some common roles of a Full Stack Engineer job include designing the overall architecture of web applications, implementing security and data protection, maintaining its code integrity and organization, and creating web applications that can be used for desktop and mobile apps. A Full Stack Engineer must be comfortable collaborating with other team members. Often, they work with other software engineers or graphic artists to design and launch new features. In most cases, businesses require Full Stack Engineers to have a degree in computer science or a related field.
