Data Engineers help their business or client improve the efficiency of information processing systems. They convert already collected data into a format that is more easily analyzed by other individuals in the company. This is usually done by building infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from various data sources. Data Engineers commonly work closely with data scientists. Data Engineers are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, electrical engineering or applied math. Positions of senior roles usually require a master’s degree and sometimes certifications like the IBM Certified Data Engineer or Google’s Certified Professional. Qualified Data Engineers often have experience working with relational databases, strong analytical skills and a history of processing and extracting values from large disconnected datasets. Companies that employ Data Engineers include Mapdwell, Amazon.com, the Central Intelligence Agency, Airbiquity, and PNC Financial Services Group.
