Job description

The Optical Network Engineer is a key part of the Viasat team, responsible for designing the companys core network infrastructure to support our expanding satellite fleet. This includes but is not limited to architecting DWDM systems, creating written network implementation design plans, and troubleshooting system issues. You will work on layer 1 through layer 3 network design, capacity planning, platform management and maintenance, as well as serve as an escalation point for significant network events.

* Design routes for fiber-based networks including point to point, ring, and path diverse routing
* Create written design documentation in support of network configurations and new technology introductions
* Identifies and develops functional test requirements and analyzes test results
* Provides technical support for complex activation, deployment, and maintenance activities and issues
* Take an active role in developing and continuously improving monitoring and management systems
* Act as an escalation contact during large outages, performing root cause failure analysis
* Troubleshoot optical transport issues using OTDR, OSA, BERT, and optical power meters

Requirements

* BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering
* 5 years of experience with optical networks including design and architecture
* Operational experience with multi-vendor DWDM network equipment
* Strong hands on technical knowledge of network components
* Software Engineering experience with coding and debugging skills in Java, Python or other modern programming language
* Experience with network management systems and network automation
* Experience in system engineering and test and link analysis with vendor-specific tools
* Experience with 100G coherent detection long-haul networks
* Experience designing, installing and operating DWDM systems
* U.S citizenship or permanent resident status required

Preferences

* Experience with use of fiber network design, planning and mapping software tools such as 3-GIS, ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS
* Experience with continuous integration & delivery and DevOps methodologies
* Operational experience working with major carriers
* Understanding of outside plant construction requirements with fiber experience preferred
* IP and Ethernet networking experience
* Experience in an Agile/Scrum environment
* Strong written and oral communications skills with the ability to influence others with your engineering solutions
