Developed in 1987 by Larry Wall, Perl is a group of general-purpose, high-level, interpreted programming languages. Its syntax makes it faster to code and easier to learn. Perl is used in developing common gateway interfaces or CGI programs. It features languages such as C, shell script and AWK. Perl is procedural with expressions, control structures, assignment statements, variables, subroutines and brace-delimited blocks. It takes attributes from shell programming like using sigils on all variables, as well as built-in functions such as calling operating system facilities and sorting. Perl facilitates and simplifies data management, text-handling and parsing tasks. This programming language is used in many applications. It can be found in high-traffic websites like IMDb, Priceline.com, Ticketmaster and DuckDuckGo. Perl is often used as the glue that ties together interfaces and systems not necessarily designed to work in unison. Its code is portable across UNIX and Windows to make maintenance and packaging software deployment and build scripts easier. GUIs or graphical user interfaces may also be developed using this programming language.
Perl throughout the years has gone through various revisions and changes. There's Perl 5 and Perl 6 that are commonly used for network programming, system administration, finance and bioinformatics. Perl Developers are knowledgeable and stay up-to-date with all aspects of the language. They can be tasked with constructing and maintaining software, performing unit testing on code, investigating technical issues and providing support where needed. These specialists will have experience with programming in Linux or other UNIX environments. They're also familiar with other programming languages like SQL, algorithms, data structures and parsing files.
