Storage management is an essentially part of a database system. Automatic Storage Management (ASM) powers the various offerings of the Oracle Database, both on premise and on the Oracle Cloud. These offerings include the Oracle Autonomous Cloud, the Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), the Oracle Database Appliance (ODA), the Oracle Database Machine (Exadata), and the Oracle Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (ZDLRA). ASM is the highly available, highly scalable, and easily manageable storage solution that is central to all these database systems.
The ASM product at its foundation is both a file system and a volume manager. The former supports millions of files and containers, while the latter supports tens of thousands of disk, flash, or NVMe devices. ASM operates in a cluster environment, where several compute nodes can share the duties of managing the file system, allowing it to stay operational even when some of the nodes become unavailable. ASM uses a distributed consensus algorithm to identify its storage, a transaction processing and cache fusion model to manage its metadata, and algorithms to achieve load balance and mirroring, so that access is fast, and data are highly available. ASM also allows storage capacity to be scaled up and old storage decommissioned, without interrupting database or application services, by dynamically relocating data across storage devices. Latest features include a service that allows flexible and independent storage provisioning and management from databases, an infrastructure to scale storage to hundreds of clusters across networks, the ability to use RAID 5 and 6 for redundancy, and the capability to take point-in-time clones of data files to be used for snapshots.
