Java Engineer, Globalization

Globalization at Airbnb:

The Globalization team at Airbnb is responsible for the overall health, quality, and delivery of textual content presented to the user in the Product. It also touches many aspects of UGC and services scalability.

We emphasize building tools over manual processes. We create, not operate. Things should go from repeatable to automated quickly. We approach the problems of phrase translation, structured content, and user-generated content holistically for our customers. Our design focus means that we can inject good phrase translation practices early in the design-to-engineering funnel, creating a higher quality end user experience.

Our job is to focus on building reliable infrastructure and tools for our product teams so that they can focus on solving user problems and new features, not reinventing platforms. Globalization doesn't sit on the other side of the fence -- we're a first class engineering citizen and help lead our infrastructure focus.

What are some examples of Globalization work at Airbnb?

Work with product engineering teams on design and implementation choices of phrase translation systems.

Bring ideas to life (i.e. production) to help make the handoff between designers and engineers better.

Optimize our phrase translation funnel and make decisions regarding the tradeoff between quality, speed, and product developer convenience.

Work with product teams to categorize UGC and train custom machine learning models to provide machine translation that is context-aware, and help product teams bring these systems to life.

The following experience is relevant to us:

5+ Years of experience working in services/scalability/backend

Experience with Java

Working on tooling for the needs of translators and/or working on vendor integration workflows to do so.

Scalability of phrase bundle delivery in a service-oriented architecture

The ability to decompose complex systems and find failure scenarios

Great communication skills

Experience with UGC systems and classification in the context of machine translation
