Engineering Managers are leaders in their field. Their responsibilities require technical knowledge and skills along with an understanding of accounting, operations, marketing and contract management. To qualify for the position, years of experience in a specific area of engineering is required. For example, the Engineering Manager might oversee the work of manufacturing, database, software or biotech engineers. They must also feel comfortable working with customers, corporate executives and stakeholders.
Some Engineering Managers have graduate-level training in that discipline. Others, however, may have advanced education in scientific areas, such as physics, statistics or chemistry. Computer skills are also important for Engineering Managers. This includes a knowledge of information technology, operating systems and database management.
Biotechnology Engineering Managers may work for environmental agencies, healthcare providers or pharmaceutical companies. Most of their day is spent overseeing research and development projects related to disease studies, drug production and food manufacturing. They must be able to collaborate and work as a team with other engineers, scientists and corporate leaders. Experience supervising people and managing clinical research provides a strong background for the Engineering Manager in the biotech industry. Some project management skills employers might look for include clinical data management, vendor selection, financial management and new product release methodology. Along with a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree, Project Management Professional certification will be a great addition to one's marketability.
