Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Wireless Systems Engineer.

Job Summary: The candidate will be responsible for developing innovative prototype solutions for military and Government sponsors. Problem solving and analysis in areas related to embedded systems software development, firmware development, software-defined radio testing, RF hardware testing, etc. These prototypes will include systems that utilize established technologies as well as systems that will provide the DoD with proof-of-concept demonstrations. Ultimately, the candidate will work with a team of engineers whose goal is to integrate various sub-system of a prototype into a real-time system, perform laboratory / field testing, assist in post-processing data analysis, and present the results to sponsors.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

* Develop and prototype innovative wireless systems to implement complex communication and networking technologies (40%).
* Deploy, integrate, and test the prototypes in operationally-realistic environments, working closely with sponsors to ensure mission success (20%).
* Assume a role as project or technical lead working closely with systems, hardware, and software engineers. (20%)
* Document work in formal technical reports and informal memoranda. Present work to sponsors and the technical community. (20%)

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline. 5 years of demonstrated experience in the development of hardware and / or software for wireless systems. Knowledge of and experience with the physical and data link layers of communication or networking systems. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-organizational team. Active DoD Secret clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

MS or Ph.D in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline. 5 years of knowledge of and experience with US military communication or electronic warfare waveforms. Expertise with several of the following tools: C, C , Python, Java, JavaScript, VHDL/Verilog, shell, MATLAB. Experience with software radio frameworks such as GnuRadio and/ or REDHAWK. Experience with Project and/or Technical management of hardware, software, or systems integration teams. Current Top Secret clearance with a SSBI.

Special Working Conditions: Travel on an as needed basis.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. Must be eligible for DoD clearance requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination. Preference for a current SSBI.
