WebOps Engineer

Team: Digital - Product Development

Status: Full-time/Exempt/Project (This position is fully funded by the Ready to Learn Grant through September 30, 2019. Renewal of the grant is subject to the receipt of additional federal appropriations through September 30, 2020)

Job Objective:

The Ready To Learn (RTL) project is a joint initiative of PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). It focuses on the development and dissemination of content across media and platforms to improve learning, with an emphasis on building science and literacy skills for children ages 2-8. CPB and PBS will partner with producers, science and literacy experts, outreach partners, and evaluators to develop learning content and employ innovative strategies to increase use at home, in the community, and in schools.

PBS KIDS digital assets are some of the most frequently used and loved properties for young kids in the US. When games don't work and videos don't play, kids cry. That's where you come in!

Essential Duties:

* Create and maintain server infrastructure powering PBS KIDS websites, apps, and games;
* Deploy infrastructure as code to improve the availability, scalability, and efficiency of platforms powering delivery of digital content;
* Implement and manage continuous delivery systems and methodologies;
* Understand, implement, and automate security controls, governance processes, and compliance validation;
* Define and deploy monitoring, metrics, and logging systems;
* Implement systems that are highly available, scalable, and self-healing;
* Peer review systems and network configurations to ensure alignment with best practices;
* Participate in on-call rotation with other members of the operations and engineering teams;
* Work independently within defined policies and procedures;
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

* Undergraduate degree from an accredited university.
* AWS certified DevOps engineer or equivalent qualifications.

Skills:

* Knowledge of and proven experience with CDNs and HTTP cache/proxy technologies.
* Expert-level knowledge of Unix or Linux system administration at scale.
* Expertise managing Serverless and/or FaaS systems.
* Experience in automation and testing via scripting/programming.
* Experience with modern web development frameworks: Flask, Pyramid, Django.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to proactively engage cross-functional partner teams effectively.
* Experience in one or more SQL-92 [RDS] or No-SQL databases like Cassandra, DynamoDB and ElasticSearch.
* Passion for resolving reliability issues and identify strategies to mitigate going forward.
* Automation 1st mindset - Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Perl, Go).
* Experience with cloud infrastructure and a good understanding of DevOps concepts like microservices, continuous delivery and monitoring.
* A real passion for empowering developer productivity.
