Job Description

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience required.

Technology Skills Required: MAC OS/UNIX knowledge, Drupal, Adobe Creative Cloud & Creative Suite (especially InDesign), HTML5, PHP, CSS3, JavaScript, MySQL, Microsoft Office/SharePoint, Responsive Web Design/Development, LAMP stacks. Experience with front-end JS frameworks consuming a JSON API, Java or Groovy/Grails, and AWS.

Special Requirements: Drupal experience required, Google Analytics experience required.

Duties and Responsibilities

* IT Coordination duties
* Optimize Harvard Magazine's technology setup to better serve the magazine's mission and needs
* Work with HUIT to create a standardized understanding of Harvard Magazine's technology requirements
* Create standards for different workstations, including hardware & software requirements
* Coordinate schedules for necessary upgrades to avoid workflow disruption
* Serve as a filter between HUIT and staff members, solving technical issues when possible to increase efficiency


* Proactively engage with external vendors in order to solve technical problems.


* Technical upkeep of harvardmagazine.com (and appropriate subdomains/microsites)
* Manage backup process for databases and site files.
* Coordinate with our web host to monitor and optimize server performance.
* Monitor website for suspicious activity and work with third party vendors to troubleshoot any security issues.
* Install security updates to Drupal core and other modules as necessary.
* Troubleshoot and remediate problems as they arise.
* Maintain detailed documentation.
* Manage annual renewals (SSL certificates, domain names).


* Business staff collaboration
* PCI Compliance
* Work with the business staff and Campus Services to coordinate completion of annual PCI self-assessments.
* Review scans via the Trustkeeper portal and implement any fixes required as DSS standards evolve.
* Ensure all new hosting platforms, external vendor work, and any other appropriate digital offerings are compliant.


* Advertising staff:
* Import classifieds bi-monthly.
* Manage banner ads and support sales staff.
* Work with the staff to identify and enhance opportunities for online revenue.
* Assist with interpretation of online ad reporting in bi-monthly cycles.


* Fundraising staff:
* Donor page revisions as necessary.
* Work with the staff to identify and enhance opportunities for online revenue.


* Editorial staff collaboration
* Manage the technical aspects of the bi-monthly web issue publication process.
* Attend weekly editorial meetings.
* Provide alumni with assistance using our web products as necessary.
* Help the art director and online editors with general web production tasks.
* Manage and improve technical workflows for email newsletters.
* Translate art director designs into functional, multi-platform web pages/templates/etc.
* Clean up and maintain archival content as time and organizational priorities permit.


* Digital Strategy
* Develop new technical and update existing capabilities as time and organizational priorities permit.
* Drupal 8 - Lead Drupal 8 migration project.
* Mobile - Continue to identify new platforms by which audiences may access Harvard Magazine's online content and ensure that the magazine is offering optimal solutions that meet audience standards.
* Analytics - Identify trends, questions, and other areas of interest that can be utilized to:
* Inform future marketing decisions
* Identify areas in need of effort, and areas of wasted effort
* Improve Harvard Magazine's knowledge of its audience and itself
