JOB DESCRIPTION:

The System Design technical lead role is a key element to the R&D system development process. The System Design Lead is responsible for leading the R&D System Development Center of Excellence (CoE) Product Development Team in the process of defining the architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. This lead will provide system definition, design, and maturation while making use of systems engineering specialties to develop satisfactory and feasible enterprise deliverables certified for customer use.

Main Responsibilities

* Initialize design definition, establish design characteristics and design enablers related to each system element, assess alternatives for obtaining system elements, and manage the design
* Develop, define, and document as-is design features, target architectures, and transformation roadmaps
* Provide the vision for how the system should evolve over time and conducts trade studies, as needed, to identify and compare alternative design solutions.

Has Technical Reviews Design Authority

* Design for Excellence (DFX) Review
* Verification & Validation Plan Review
* Design Verification and Validation Review

Serve as a problem solver and technical subject matter expert (SME) providing technical resources, industry standard methodologies, and proven techniques to perform infrastructure and architecture development

Recommend possible solutions to complex or ambiguous customer challenges and applies technical expertise in defining scopes and appropriate approaches to new assignments

Mentor Systems Engineers in R&D Systems Engineering approach; Manage conflict resolution

Collaborate with Systems Architect(s) on product/technology evaluations; Collaborate with R&D Product Management on On-Market product improvements

Qualifications

PhD in Engineering or related field with 6 years of significant product life cycle experience MS in Engineering or related field with 8 years of significant product life cycle experience BS in Engineering or related field with 10 years of significant product life cycle experience Proven ability to innovate with a history of successful new or improved product releases. Accomplishments at Abbott a plus. Ability to advise the various functions within the division on how they can manage their particular risks. Interacts well with diverse groups within R&D and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators. Listens and understands others' points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one's own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations. Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast paced goal-driven environment. Interpersonal skills to negotiate & reconcile interdisciplinary differences optimizing overall organizational goals. Technical background in healthcare, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, or pharmaceutical companies

Preferred Qualifications

10+ years practicing systems engineering in an industry recognized for systems engineering excellence

Experience in coordinating technology designs with architectural requirements and constraints

An understanding of contemporary requirements elicitation, analysis, specification, verification, and management practices and the ability to apply them in practice

8+ years' experience in complex and scalable services:

* Technical information analysis; Technical product integration
* Graphics processing unit (GPU) and central processing unit (CPU) programming
* Microprocessor software and/or hardware; Software, Firmware development
* Real-time operating systems; High performance computing (HPC)
* Presenting different levels of abstraction; Visual renditions of different abstractions and viewpoints
