Job Description

Overview

The Systems Engineer - Lead provides support to the Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), Food Applications Regulatory Management (FARM) project. This position supervises, coordinates and/or performs additions and changes to network hardware and operating systems, and attached devices; including investigation, analysis, recommendation, configuration, installation, and testing of new network hardware and software.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Leads a team that provides direct support in the day-to-day operations on network hardware and operating systems including the evaluation of system utilization, monitoring response time and primary support for detection and correction of operational problems.

Troubleshoots at the physical level of the network, working with network measurement hardware and software, as well as physical checking and testing of hardware devices at the logical level, working with communication protocols.

Participates in planning design, technical review and implementation for new network infrastructure hardware and network operating systems for voice and data communication networks.

Maintains network infrastructure standards including network communication protocols such as TCP/IP.

Provides technical consultation, training and support to IT staff.

Diagnoses and resolves complex communication problems.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years' of systems engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience with storage related hardware and software preferred.

Expert knowledge applying security to systems via all System Engineering technical and management processes

Knowledge in requirements analysis, risk management, configuration management and verification, backups and infrastructure, process documentation, and backup architecture management

Expert knowledge of technical area and testing to assess interrelated requirements and impacts

Knowledge of professional and programmatic engineering that includes cyber theories, principles, practices and techniques

Knowledgeable of hardware and software capabilities and limitations supporting a functional system

Excellent customer service attitude, communication skills (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Ability to leverage knowledge in order to develop integrated and technical risk assessments required to analyze very complex interdisciplinary problems

Ability to help identify, quantify and facilitate development of risk mitigation strategies for cyber related issues

Ability to comply with established policies, directives, and guidelines

Ability to provide recommendations for security changes, system acquisitions, technical solutions, and lifecycle management

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
