Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. APL is looking for a Systems Engineer and/or Systems Analyst to significantly contribute in an engineering team environment to advance the state-of-the-art of Military Mission Planning systems around the globe.

Job Summary: Perform systems engineering/analysis throughout the system lifecycle development for mission planning tools for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Navy air and missile defense (AMD) systems, including: system and operations analysis, concept exploration and detailed design (e.g., algorithm development), system architecting and model based systems engineering (MBSE), and requirements definition. Participate in an engineering team environment. Work within a culture in which innovation is encouraged and supported. Directly contribute to the development of innovative ideas to solve critical engineering challenges including ideation and collaboration with a wide range of staff with various academic backgrounds and experience levels. Produce documentation to capture all contributions. Effectively communicate proposed concepts/solutions and analysis results. Develop and deliver formal presentations to sponsors and the engineering community.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

* (50%) Contribute throughout system lifecycle including: create system architectural descriptions using MBSE; define and analyze system requirements and documents; utilize system models and simulations for analysis; and develop software tools for analysis
* (35%) Identify challenges and gaps in AMD. Conduct research, studies, and analysis to develop and explore concepts to address these challenges/gaps. Design, implement, document, and test prototype solutions to challenges/gaps (e.g., algorithms, visualizations).
* (15%) Provide subject matter expertise for real world scenarios facing our military. Conduct research, studies, and analysis to translate supporting data into actionable information and associated recommendations for U.S. Navy and MDA decision makers.

Required Qualifications:

* MS degree in Systems Engineering, Applied Math, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or equivalent
* Experience in engineering, designing, and analyzing systems including conducting analysis with Matlab, Python, or equivalent and developing system requirements and architecture descriptions
* Proven success working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
* Demonstrated success in working in an engineering team size of 3 or more people
* Strong communication skills in both written and verbal
* Security Clearance: Must already possess a Valid Secret Eligibility or Equivalent issued by the United States

Desired Qualifications:

* PhD degree in Systems Engineering, Applied Math, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or equivalent
* 3 or more years of experience in engineering, designing, and analyzing systems including developing analysis tools with Matlab, Python, R (i.e., R Project for Statistical Computing), or equivalent and developing system requirements and architecture descriptions with MBSE languages such as SysML
* Demonstrated success in working in an engineering team size of 7 or more people
* Excellent verbal communication skills including demonstrated success in building/presenting technical presentations to engineering review teams as well as sponsor review teams
* Experience working with and domain expertise associated with United States Navy military systems

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel. Frequent work in closed areas.
