Overview

Systems Administrator - AS/400 provides support to the Chief Technology Officer, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) Center For Cellular Engineering (CCE). This position performs the maintenance and administration of IBM iSeries servers including message handling, command line utilities, work management, job and print control, device management, system configuration, system security, backup and restore, and file transfer integration. NIH is currently on V7/R1 operating system and this position supports the plans to upgrade to a V8 Operating System.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assists in daily administration of IBM iSeries computer hardware and software.

Assists in installation, configuration and maintenance of IBM iSeries hardware, software, networked devices, journaling, and IBM iAccess software.

Develops, documents and maintains procedures for system utilities such as backup/restore, performance tuning and configuration of environments as well as incremental backups as required.

Loads and tests operating system and application software releases and fixes in development/test, productions environments, load application software patches, performance and tuning utilities.

Documents and implements application-specific security groups and classes.

Provides cross training for other team members on the use of IBM administrative skills.

Prepares and submits a Bi-weekly status report.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of ten (10) years relevant technical experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience supporting iSeries hardware, Software and networked devices.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
