The Opportunity - Sr. Software Engineer

Software Engineers personify the notion of constant improvement as they work with their team to build software that delivers on our mission to improve student outcomes. Responsibilities:

* Develop next generation content management tools to facilitate product content development
* Work collaboratively as part of a software development team producing the code that matters to the students and teachers who use HMH products and services.
* Eagerly learn and apply new cutting edge technologies.
* Contribute to our engineering culture and ever-improving concept of engineering best practices.

Successful Candidates must demonstrate an appropriate combination of:

* 3 - 5 years of experience and a Bachelor's degree in computer science or a STEM field.
* Logical and systematic problem solving skills.
* Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in both small and large teams and cross-functional environments while contributing to the larger goals of an engineering team. You know how to make your team better one step at a time.
* Full understanding of agile software development methodologies and practices.
* Strong communication skills - both verbal and written.
* Passionate curiosity and a desire to learn and grow throughout your career

Extensive experience working with technologies and concepts such:

* 2-3 years hands-on development experience with Alfresco Content Management System or similar platform
* Integration experience with learning management systems
* Experience with Solr, search optimization
* JVM-based languages such as Java and Scala, Javascript
* Development frameworks such as Spring
* Web technologies such as JavaScript, CSS, and HTML
* Database technologies such as SQL, Marklogic , Aurora, Redshift, Liquibase or Flyway
* No-SQL technologies such as Redis, MongoDB and Cassandra
* Architectural concepts such as micro-services and separation of concerns
* In-depth knowledge of class-based, object-oriented programming and design patterns
* Development tools such as GitHub, Jira, Jenkins and Maven
* Cloud technologies such as AWS and Azure
* Data Center Operating Technologies such as Apache Mesos Apache Aurora, and TerraForm and container services such as Docker and Kubernetes
* Behavior-driven or test-driven development
