I: Job Summary

The Sr. Business Analyst, Lab Informatics responsibilities are to serve as a liaison between the business and IT to identify and address business technology needs. They will be responsible for analyzing requirements, procedures, and problems to automate or improve existing systems. This position will translate business requirements, information, and data into functional specifications and visualized system solutions as well as support the implementation and testing of the solutions. The Sr. Business Analyst will also assist the business to support global solutions and partner with the business units for ongoing process or technical enhancements.

II: Responsibilities

Business Analysis and Reporting

* Responsible for understanding lab informatics business requirements to work effectively with business owners to define and translate business requirements
* Accountable for effectively elicitation of requirements using a variety of tools such as interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, business analysis, task and workflow analysis
* Critically evaluate information to harmonize conflicts and ensure appropriate detail is captured to translate information into applicable requirements documents
* Review, analyze, and create detailed documentation of business systems and user needs, including workflow, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify business applications
* Work closely with business partners to identify and maximize opportunities to use information and technology to improve product, service and/or business processes
* Collaborate with vendors and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyze tradeoffs between usability and performance needs
* Serve as the conduit between the business community and the IT Business Application team through which requirements flow
* Review technical documents with IT project staff to ensure business requirements are adequately reflected in technical planning documents
* Provide ongoing system support to the business as IT point of escalation and management of vendor relationships for break-fix and enhancement activities
* Actively assess and manage application lifecycle to ensure appropriate annual planning occurs for each system's need
* Proactively assists with the identification of project training requirements with respect to existing or new technologies
* Works with Business Owners and other personnel to design and implement training initiatives that will ensure system use capabilities of personnel within Emergent

Quality Assurance and Testing

* Collaborates with the business and Computer Systems Validation to define, develop and implement quality assurance test practices and procedures for project implementation and ongoing support
* Understands design specifications to support the business in defining test conditions, developing accurate and complete test plans, and completing/coordinating testing according to plan with appropriate deliverables
* Ensures all tests are conducted and documented according IT standards
* Ensures all project and support changes follow change management process and are entered and tracked appropriately
* Ensures continuing operational quality by documenting fixes and enhancements, coordinating remediation with vendor, and adherence to test and release processes

Leadership and Communication

* Collaborates with functional business units within Emergent to achieve strategic, tactical and project goals
* Relays relevant project information to stakeholders in a timely manner
* Improves upon existing approaches by seeking innovative opportunities to creatively transform current industry practices into fresh alternative solutions
* Maintains clear project focus and works effectively with technical analysts, project managers, management team, internal stakeholders, customers and vendors to attain project goals and objectives
* Ability to manage projects from initiation and planning through execution; scope definition, creating and executing project plans, communication plans, issue management, escalation, resource planning, and conflict resolution
* Effectively plans, organizes and conducts meetings with stakeholders from any level of the organization
* Understands the necessity of project standards and applies them consistently
* Prioritizes multiple tasks effectively

III: Education, Experience & Skills

* Excellent business process analysis skills to assess user requirements against system capabilities to create design documentation for business communication and technical development
* Proven leadership and project management skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of stakeholders
* Strong analytical interpretation skills required to interpret customer business needs and pain points, to define and translate into a software solution to meet needs
* Experience in using enterprise-wide requirements definition and management systems and methodologies
* Self-starter with ability to successfully engage in multiple initiatives simultaneously


* Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university required
* Minimum 7 years' experience as business analyst or combination business analyst and project management
* Minimum 3 year's in life sciences industry implementing and/or supporting validated systems for GxP compliance, including multiple LIMS implementations
