Job Description

Software Engineer III Informatics Development

The Allen Institute for Brain Science seeks a Software Engineer III (SWE) to join the Data Management team. This SWE will support large scale scientific data processing pipelines by creating and maintaining code and monitoring and curating the production pipeline to ensure the creation and delivery of large data sets. There is a significant project and data management component to this role.

This self-starter role will work with stakeholders to define requirements and convert them to actionable specifications. The SWE will collaborate with data production teams and engineers to design high-throughput data collection and analysis workflows. You will write your own software and will manage large scientific data sets and analysis pipelines serving neuroscience and brain imaging research communities around the world. You will interact regularly with neuroscientists and a wide variety of engineers, collaborating in a large team working on new discoveries about the brain.

Our team uses popular and modern software tools in our Linux-based workflow. Most analysis code will be implemented in Python, although other languages could be required. You will design processing pipelines that run independently, and using our custom laboratory information management system, which is written in Ruby on Rails, running on PostgreSQL.

To gain more insight on the projects you will impact, please visit the Allen Institute for Brain Sciences website link to: http://brain-map.org/

* Use software engineering principles to write, maintain, and deploy robust scientific software based on high level functional requirements and team input.
* Collaborate effectively with experts in diverse scientific and engineering topics, including neuroscience, high performance scientific computing, computer vision, and web applications.
* Apply a modern software engineering workflow, including emphasis on code review, continuous integration, and automatic testing.
* Create reports to summarize experimental data for review and validation.
* Participate in writing, presenting and reviewing strategic and operational reports

* Experience with command line development tools in a Linux environment.
* Expert level development experience in at least one general purpose, dynamically typed object-oriented language (Python, Ruby).
* Familiarity with entire software toolchain, including source code management (git), debuggers, and testing methodologies.
* Ability to gather requirements from collaborators, synthesize into development work items, describe to colleagues and discuss implementation ideas, record issues, execute and complete.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Advanced degree in a relevant technical discipline.
* History of contributing to open source projects.
