Job Description

The systems and networks engineering role is to work closely with the Systems and Support Manager and VP for IT to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of in-house information technology that supports core organizational functions and working within an existing technology group. The Systems/Network Engineer achieves success through monitoring, maintaining, supporting, planning, securing and optimizing all base infrastructure including compute, storage, network and associated operating systems and services/applications. Supports all technical services at the Garden for over 500 end users including: infrastructure, business applications; devices; email; and the telephone system. Requires proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT investments.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

* Ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
* Work with executive team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.
* Collaborate with executive management and department leaders to assess near- and long-term network capacity needs.
* Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.
* Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery.

Acquisition & Deployment

* Design and deploy new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems.
* Design and deploy company LANs, WANs, and wireless networks, including servers, virtualization, storage, routers, firewalls, switches, UPSs, and other related hardware.
* Perform cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems network products and services to aid management in making implementation decisions.
* Conduct research on software products, network products, services, protocols, and standards to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts.
* Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure products and services.

Operational Management

* Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
* Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to system programmer and development teams.
* Monitor and manage networks to ensure their smooth and reliable operation and performance
* Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the institution's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
* Integrate servers, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems and manage them on a day-to-day basis.
* Ensure system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and other applications.
* Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
* Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
* Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
* Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports.
* Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.
* Responsible for the security of systems and network including applying patches, upgrades, and periodic maintenance as required.

Requirements

* Bachelor's degree in the field of computer science, or information systems; master's degree in either of these fields preferred.
* Proven experience in supporting, maintaining, and monitoring of infrastructure components and services. (AD, DNS, DHCP, Hypervisors, SAN, LAN, WAN, Networking, WLAN, Office 365)
* Basic experience with core software applications, finance, HR, Payroll/ Time and Attendance, fundraising/membership, ticketing, merchandising/retail Point of Sale and ecommerce, education, library management systems, and digital asset management systems.
* Excellent software/hardware troubleshooting experience
* Strong, hands-on technical knowledge of PC operating systems
* Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
* Good project management skills.
* Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.
* Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
* Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
* Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
* Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
* Strong customer service orientation.
* Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
* Experience in using basic hand or battery powered tools when installing or troubleshooting equipment.
* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when installing or troubleshooting equipment.
