ROLE SUMMARY:

The Senior System Engineer in the Roche Sequencing Unit will be part of the system development team focusing on the development of a cutting edge next-generation sequencing (NGS) system for RUO and IVD assays and applications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Expertise in instrument workflow design and software development is essential.
* Nucleic acid based diagnostics technology background and next-generation sequencing experience are highly desirable. Other system development experience in complex clinical diagnostic development environments is a plus.
* Significant experience with all phases of technology development is highly desirable.
* Knowledge of all phases of NGS workflows and data analysis is desirable. Experience with NGS systems development is a plus.
* Knowledge of software development and data analysis.
* Previous experience working with or managing relationships with external OEM vendors.

The individual responsibilities are:

* Develops test plans, writes test cases, and implements and executes test protocols to verify the hardware, software and system performance.
* Experiences with risk management, requirement management and verification and validation is highly desired.
* Works under general supervision, to conduct and monitor experiments utilizing established and published procedures, and technical and theoretical understanding.
* Makes recommendations to resolve problems encountered during experimental procedures.
* Summarizes experimental results, and reviews conclusions with supervisor/project leader. Communicates decisions in the form of reports and presentations
* Keeps supervisor/project leader informed of project status, particularly of significant findings and results in critical problem areas. Performs work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g. OSHA).
* Oversees these aspects of project work to ensure completion within the expected parameters and time frame.
* Work is typically complex and of considerable scope and therefore requires application of technical principles, tools and knowledge gained from previous work experience.
* Creative, imaginative thinking is required. Works independently with general management direction. Work is reviewed in detail over a specific time frame.
* Activities are planned jointly with management to develop objectives and. Progress reported at appropriate intervals.
* May directly supervise technical personnel. Provides technical advice to technical community.
* Provides technical advice/guidance to junior engineering staff, and serves as a role model.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* BS with at least 5 years related experience OR MS/Ph.D. degree with at least 3 years related experience in engineering, sciences, or related field with thorough technical knowledge and leadership ability
* Experience working on development of diagnostic devices under strict design control processes, experimental design, versatile laboratory practice, data analysis, and data and concept presentation.
* Linux knowledge and bioinformatics background is a plus
