Job Description

What you'll be doing…

Tableau introduced the world to self-service data visualization by replacing paper reports with dynamic, interactive data visualizations to help people see and understand data. The Metrics team is building the fastest way to stay on top of the numbers that matter to you anywhere and on any device. If you enjoy working on hard challenges intrinsic to a v1 project that propels adoption of state-of-the-art engineering approaches, then come help us realize this vision featured in a recent Tableau Conference Keynote.

We are looking for a senior software engineer to design and deliver solid back-end components contributing to delightful user experiences. Metrics depends heavily on the VizQL pipeline, which is the heart of Tableau's analytics pipeline, so the majority of development for this position will be in C++. Metrics is a full-stack feature, however, so there will be opportunities to code in other languages and environments as well. The experience on mobile devices is key to the success of Metrics, so supplementary experience or interest in mobile development is a bonus. Great candidates also show a strong desire to stretch themselves and add to their skillset. Our engineers hold each other accountable for the quality of their features, so candidates need to embrace hunting for potential issues in designs and code and implementing automated tests. The team runs on lean, agile engineering principles aiming to get customer feedback early to reinforce product direction or fail fast and pivot to a new approach.

Who you are…

* Experienced: You have built and released high quality software products with substantial engineering rigor based on software development fundamentals and a dedication to excellence established via a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent years of industry experience.
* Technical: You have a solid technical foundation with fluency in one or more technology stacks that include C++ and can constructively review the work of others to ensure high quality.
* Customer-focused: You regularly think from the customer perspective. User experience is important to you. You are eager to identify and fix user issues in the field. You also recognize that customers only realize the benefit of your work when it gets into their hands so you are driven to release.
* Creative: Whether you're brainstorming with the user experience designer or buddy testing a colleague's implementation, you explore multiple ideas within constraints and also enjoy challenging those constraints, all to achieve the best customer experience possible.
* Curious: You like to understand how things work. You don't settle for making something work without also understanding how it works. When you learn a technology, you dig deep, and are not satisfied with knowing the bare minimum.
* A proponent of continuous improvement: You identify areas for improvement and work on positive change over time, balancing that change with productivity. You refactor, eliminate technical debt, and leave things better than you found them.
* A True Team Player: You enjoy collaborating, learning from others so we can all become better developers. You assume good intent in others and actively do your part to make a positive work environment.
* Team builder: You want to build our teams and make them stronger. You mentor fellow team members and learn from them, you have peers review your code, and vice-versa. You also participate in interview loops, and reach out to friends, colleagues, and the general public to assist in filling open positions
