Description

The Sr. Scientific Systems Administrator will provide oversight and leadership to the team providing scientific systems administration, optimization design, and engineering support for specialized HPC clusters, virtual server environments, Linux servers, NAS, SANs, and relational databases. Supports, enhances, optimizes and extends the current system(s) in order to meet evolving requirements. Defines requirements for complex systems, preparing studies and analyzing available and next generation computational technologies. Supports the analysis and evaluation of extremely complex system requirements requiring a thorough understanding of all parameters affecting and interfacing with the system. Plans and monitors the optimizing of system operation and resource utilization, and performs systems capacity analysis and planning. Provides specific, detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques, and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements.

Administers RedHat/CentOS/Scientific Linux, Perl/Python, shell scripting, Sun Grid Engine, Apache, vmWare ESX, Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Oracle, cfengine, Scylde, Coraid, Isilon, DataDomain, and NexSAN. Supports the full range of software support and maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, requirements definition, design, development, installation, maintenance, problem diagnosis and resolution, development, and enhancement of system and application software, as well as supports various scientific and programming services in use within DIR, install and support commercial and freely available scientific software. Constructs evaluation strategies to evaluate new technologies and make recommendations to the business for incorporation of these technologies into upcoming products and services. These evaluations may include developing and/or running benchmark performance suites.

Candidate has experience in HPC engineering and design including HPC software management, HPC operating system upgrades, and HPC resource management supporting gene sequencing and bioinformatics research. Experience working with scientists and government management to successfully complete projects such as HPC centralized configuration, HPC administration automation, and HPC mass deployment. Maintains technical expertise in relevant HPC technologies which may include storage, networking, high-speed interconnects, operating systems, cluster file systems, parallel programming, cluster management, message passing interface (MPI), and job scheduling.

Integrates infrastructure design with other enterprise IT elements such as virtualization and cloud computing. Evaluates and reports on new computational technologies. May also support or lead systems engineering activities such as: Concept of Operations Formulation, Requirements Definition, Analysis and Engineering, System Architecting, System Analysis and Design, Interface and Data Architectures, Validation and Verification, System Integration, System & Operations. Performance Analysis, Lifecycle Cost Analysis & Estimation, Decision Analysis and Physical Configuration Analysis (PCA). Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

* Bachelor's of Science/Master's Degree in Systems Engineering or related discipline and 10+ years relevant experience, NIH experience for specialized HPC clusters, virtual server environments, Linux servers, NAS, SANs, and relational databases.


* Minimum of ten (10) years in scientific systems administration, optimization design, and engineering support.


* Certifications: Shall have nationally recognized certifications appropriate to the position and operating system.



DESIRED:

* A RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) certification would be a plus.
