The Department of Pediatrics is deeply committed to its mission of teaching, research, and patient care. As the second largest Department in the UW School of Medicine, Pediatrics has twenty-one clinical divisions with approximately 1,500 appointments, including approximately 520 paid faculty members, 165 paid staff employees, 125 residents, 100 fellows, and 650 volunteer/affiliate faculty and continues to grow each year. The Department of Pediatrics has a close affiliation with Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH) and Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI). Faculty members and staff employees in the Department are located at both institutions. In addition, the Department deploys staff to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and other non-UW Medicine affiliated institutions in the region.
The Department of Pediatrics, Information Services team has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist. Under general direction of the Department Computing Manager, the Senior Computer Specialist will be expected to apply high level knowledge of desktop, server and networking technologies to develop and maintain desktop deployment and management systems, as well as other server-based solutions/services. The position will work closely with the IT team, as well as faculty and staff and expected to provide ongoing communication and status reports on projects and/or troubleshooting issues.
The Senior Computer Specialist will be responsible over hardware, operating system and software. This position is also expected to provide 2nd tier Helpdesk support for all hardware/software issues that may arise. This position will work independently and will require the ability to gain proficiency and apply these technologies in day-to-day problem solving and longer-term projects.
Primary duties job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Backend Desktop Support Systems:
Research, design and development of technology specifications for backend desktop support and other server-based systems/solutions
Build, test and deployment of backend desktop support and other server-based systems/solutions
Upgrade and ongoing support of backend desktop support and other server-based systems/solutions
Create, test and maintain workstation images including security updates, anti-virus/firewall components and application packages
Maintain workstation inventory database, including structural design change recommendations
Research, develop, test and create Active Directory Group policies to aid in the management of user and workstation accounts
Maintain current technical specifications and critical change documentation of all primary systems
Collaborate with Tier 1 Desktop Support to provide escalated support on:
User account & password management
Desktop hardware/software troubleshooting
Lost and deleted file/folder restore requests
Remote access setup
New desktop/laptop computer purchasing
Provide Backup High-Performance Cluster Support:
Assessment and specification, as well as configuration and testing of network/system connectivity to maintain optimal system performance
Firewall configurations and permissions, as well as overall security of the Department's high-performance computer clusters
Ongoing Linux-based system maintenance/administration
Storage Management and Backup Systems Support:
Research and specification of new and updated storage systems for all department document and other work product storage needs
Monitor storage capacity and utilization and assist in developing long term plans for storage retention policy, document archiving
Research and specification of new and updated backup and archiving systems/solutions/policies for Department document and other work product
Provide ongoing support for storage and backup systems
Research and assess new technologies and products/tools for potential use in the management, ongoing support and security of department infrastructure
Collaborate with Department Computing Manager in the research and development of the department budget
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
2-3 years of related work experience
Experience with desktop and server-level hardware, operating systems and software including Windows and MacOS
Experience with Active Directory and Windows Infrastructure
Experience configuring/supporting firewalls, Anti-virus and Remote Access/VPN Solutions
Experience providing excellent customer service
Experience with Linux OS, Imaging and Networking Mac systems, NetApp Storage Servers and High-Performance Cluster support
Experience with UW-IT Services
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be able to provide onsite support and attend meetings at several Seattle-area locations (Seattle Children's, Sand Point, Northgate, Lake Union and downtown Seattle). Must be able to pickup or deliver computer hardware, such as desktop computers, peripherals, etc.; a UW car is available for this.
