The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary:

The CWMD Analytic Systems Group of the Asymmetric Operations Sector is looking for a Senior Android Software Engineer to develop inventive, cutting-edge prototype solutions to improve situational awareness in tactical environments for critical national missions. This may involve:

* Surveying current academic research to engineer practical solutions to mobile application development and deployment challenges
* Developing software frameworks to manage and analyze streaming data from many sources in tactical environments
* Collaborating with Laboratory, for-profit contractors, and sponsor teams to address critical sponsor needs
* Effectively communicating results with non-expert audiences, and generating innovative ideas to benefit the country

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

1. Design, implement, test, and deploy Android applications (65%)

2. Interact with end users and gather requirements (15%)

3. Lead design reviews to gather critical feedback on system design, integration, and testing (5%)

4. Mentoring other developers on Android technologies (10%)

5. Document and present papers on current research and development activities (5%)

Required Qualifications:

BA or BS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field with emphasis on computer science and mobile application development; 2 years of end-user Android application development. 5 years of Java development experience. Strong problem solving skills; Ability to work independently or within a group; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and organizational skills; demonstrated initiative; ability to work on, and set priorities for, multiple, dynamic projects to react to changing national security requirements.

Desired Qualifications:

MS or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering; database experience on Android (e.g., SQLite, Realm.io); familiarity with client server communication protocols and data formats such as web services, REST, XML or JSON; human factors experience with Android applications.

Special Working Conditions: Some limited travel (up to 10%) to customer sites may be required. Occasional weekend and other after-hours work required to handle and/or complete critical project/work-related business needs.
