Job Description

CityLab, The Atlantic's sister site devoted to the most pressing issues and innovative ideas shaping cities and neighborhoods, is looking for an exceptional interactives developer to help us amplify the ambition of our visual journalism. This limited-term part-time position is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of expanding the reach and breadth of a growing news and opinion site with a distinct mission, entrepreneurial attitude, and willingness to experiment.

We are seeking a front-end developer who is looking to use their skills to tell great interactive stories. In particular, this person will help us expand our work building narratives around geography and place. You should bring the insight, technical acumen, and communication skills to devise interactive web pages from conception to completion.

Responsibilities include:

* Work with our journalists to devise, design, and code interactives, data visualizations, and other products that amplify CityLab's reporting and analysis;
* Keep up-to-date with new ways to tell our stories through graphics, data visualization, and imagery and serve as a resource on these topics to the CityLab team;
* Produce clean code that meets site standards, including browser and device compatibility requirements;
* Implement vigorous QA practices to make sure our journalism looks great in production, and take responsibility for maintaining finished products;
* Put UX (user-interface design) at the front of design process, so that all visualizations are intuitive, pleasant, and easy to use for our diverse audience.

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

* 2+ years experience building front-end experiences, with a particular focus on data visualization;
* Familiarity with common visualization tools and libraries, such as d3, three.js, and mapbox-gl;
* Experience with GIS and an interest in developing truly insightful maps;
* Experience working with large datasets (Census and open data experience preferred);
* Knowledge and experience with digital design principles;
* Capacity for deep collaboration with non-development staff;
* Experience working with journalism teams or other products that reach a large general-interest audience.

You'll get noticed if you have:

* A track record of turning great story ideas and reporting into sharp and clearly defined visual products;
* An aptitude for finding the best medium for stories or information;
* A journalism sensibility;
* Some interest in and understanding of the subjects we cover;
* An affinity for and experience with maps.

This is a grant-funded, limited-term position with funding for up to 18 months. We expect the time commitment to be about half-time, but there is some flexibility depending on work structure and pay. CityLab's main office is in Washington, D. C., but remote candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please submit a resume, brief cover letter, link to portfolio and a code sample.
