Job Description

Areté Associates, an employee-owned company, is a growing research and development firm recognized for contributing to national security objectives by supplying innovative solutions to challenging technical problems faced by the United States. Our Arlington, VA office has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist in image processing algorithm development reporting to the Senior Manager, Image Processing & Computer Vision. This is a non-exempt non-supervisory full-time position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Applies technical workflows for image processing, detection and tracking, full-motion-video analysis, or object recognition.
* Adapts existing codes to process and visualize data including framing imagery, electro-optic (E/O), thermal, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), or LiDAR.
* Evaluates algorithm performance and develops beneficial modifications as needed.
* Prioritizes multiple tasks and contributes to completion of technical milestones on schedule.
* Prepares presentation-worthy graphics and technical briefings, with an emphasis on high-quality visualization and technical writing.
* Provides project management support in the form of proposal preparation, participation in marketing presentations, and ongoing strategic business conversations.
* Additional duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* BS, MS or Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics, Geophysics, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Geospatial Analytics, Remote Sensing, Information Science, Image Processing, or related technical field.
* Intellectual curiosity and desire for continuous learning
* Strong scientific background
* Skilled and innovative problem solver
* Comfortable adapting to a wide variety of roles to support different types of technical projects
* Proficient in Python/Numpy, C/C++, or Matlab
* Proficient in the use of standard MS Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
* Ability to learn and apply software packages and tools as needed.
* Experience analyzing sensor data
* Comfortable interfacing with a variety of military and technical personnel.
* Confident approaching senior scientists for guidance and implementing their technical recommendations.
* Independently performs research of available literature to fill in knowledge gaps.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Technical experience or expertise in one or more of the following topics is highly desirable:

* Bayesian statistics
* Detection, tracking and estimation
* Satellite or airborne image processing
* Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Processing
* LiDAR data processing
* Machine learning and computer vision
* 2D and 3D Convolutional Neural Nets
* Data fusion and image fusion
* Image classification and/or automated target recognition
* Cloud computing and/or developing cloud applications
* GPU acceleration of image processing algorithms using CUDA or other frameworks
* Current active security clearance
