We have an opening for a Systems Software Developer to work on Flux, our next generation resource management and scheduling framework. You will perform feature development in the area of managing massively large numbers of resources and jobs in a resilient way, as well as support bank accounting and job prioritization. Once Flux is later widely deployed and used in production as a system resource manager and scheduler on large Livermore Computing (LC) systems, you will troubleshoot, debug, maintain, and administer Flux on these systems. This position is in the Software Development Group in the Livermore Computing Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

* Design, develop, and deploy new components for Flux, including a job accounting system, fair-share scheduling policies, and resiliency strategies.
* Administrate Flux for production environments once Flux is widely deployed on LC.
* Provide software engineering support for the Flux Framework using development best practices, tools, and processes.
* Troubleshoot and debug Flux and develop software patches.
* Contribute to the long-term maintenance of Flux.
* Collaborate with scientists and researchers on moderately complex problems in scheduling to bring research results to practical use.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

* Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues which may also involve interfacing with various technical staff having different areas of expertise.
* Independently research, investigate and recommend new technologies and techniques for Flux.
* Design and develop software to solve complex systems-level problems or provide expanded feature sets.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
* Proficient software development experience in a team environment, including programming in C and/or C++ and interpreted languages such as Python.
* Broad experience with analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute creative solutions to problems.
* Comprehensive experience with distributed version control software such as git.
* Broad Experience of fundamental database technologies such as SQL and/or NoSQL.
* Broad Eperience of fundamental batch job scheduler concepts.
* Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with application developers, system programmers, and other technical staff.
* Ability to work effectively under general direction in a dynamic team environment and the ability to work off hours as needed for production problem resolution.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

* Significant experience writing system software in a Linux or Unix environment.
* Significant experience providing innovative solutions to broadly defined tasks and problems.
* Ability to work effectively with minimal guidance in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.

Desired Qualifications

* Master's degree in Computer Science or related field.
* Experience with Linux system software development and HPC/distributed system resource manager and scheduler software development, or development experience in an HPC environment.
* Comprehensive knowledge of parallel and/or distributed computing concepts.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
