We are seeking a Hardware Research Manager to join our research team. We are looking for a talented researcher with a background in delivering amazing hardware products for consumers and businesses. As a Research Manager at Oculus in Seattle, WA, you will be tackling the challenges that help to define what it means for users to have quality interactions with VR displays and input devices. We are looking for candidates with experience in guiding a research team to create generative, iterative, and evaluative projects - you must be familiar with every aspect of the product development lifecycle, including up-front research and discovery, definition, and analysis of requirements. You must become a trusted, strategic partner to product stakeholders by delivering actionable insights that lead to demonstrable business value. To this end, you will be required to articulate the findings from your research team to design, engineering, and product leadership, as well as be a strong advocate for the role of research in product development. You must be a data expert, but also be able to be creative and develop new methodologies within your team for emerging technologies within VR. You must be able to develop your team's skills and foster collaborations across adjacent teams. It's not enough to answer interesting questions about user behavior; our team focuses on impact. We value the ability to translate observations about user behavior into actionable insights.
* Build, lead, mentor, inspire, and enable a world-class hardware research team.
Work with user research, research scientists and cross-functional teams to develop and pursue a vision for next-generation virtual reality technology.
Explore technical requirements to create new experiences and advance technologies necessary to create architectures that can deliver these requirements.
Collaborate and work across teams to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline (hardware, software, computer vision, etc.).
Derive novel experimental approaches to generate insights on novel display and input systems for AR/VR.
Empower the research team to employ existing knowledge of human capabilities and limitations to help guide engineers toward effective hardware solutions.
Communicate findings of experiments and set target specifications for novel display systems.
* 10+ years of hands-on hardware research and product development experience.
2+ years of management experience.
Mentorship experience with experience leading an organization at various experience levels ranging from interns to researchers.
Technical knowledge across a range of topics including anthropometrics, measurement of physical forces and user perceptions, qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
Subject matter expert in applied research demonstrated through publications, patents, and shipped products.
Experience collaborating and working across teams to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline (hardware, software, etc.).
Masters or Ph.D. with a focus or experience in human factors, human perception/performance, ergonomics, or related field.
