About the UnitThe Division of the Biological Sciences (BSD) is the largest operating unit of the University of Chicago. It includes the Pritzker School of Medicine, approximately 20 academic units, degree-granting committees, and research centers and institutes. BSD is located on the University's main campus in Hyde Park, ten minutes south of downtown Chicago. BSD's patient care operations are conducted primarily at the University of Chicago Hospital and clinics, which share the same campus.

Job Summary:

We seek a Full Stack Web Developer for the new Duchossois Family Institute (DFI) at the University of Chicago. The DFI seeks to accelerate research and interventions based on how the human immune system, microbiome and genetics interact to maintain health. A large focus of the DFI is on advancing scientific discovery through building a vibrant research and innovation community as part of a DFI Research Incubator. This role will support development of a web-based research data management platform. The team will work with biomedical Big Data in the form clinical data, sequence data and the results of analyses. This role is integral to successfully serving the research community to address their data management and analysis challenges. The candidate will be required to work on user-facing Web interfaces, REST-based back-end, and databases, and have the opportunity to influence decisions in areas spanning development and testing processes, release management, software selection, technical architecture, and sprint planning.

This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by extramural funds (e.g., grant, gift, endowment) which are renewed under provisions set by the grantor. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these extramural funds and satisfactory job performance. If this position is eliminated due to the discontinuation of extramural funding, you will be given a minimum of one pay period's written notice (if exempt: 30 days, if non-exempt: 2 weeks), or pay in-lieu of notice.

Responsibilities:

* Build and develop user-facing Web applications and services.
* Create high quality, well designed, efficient and testable code in accordance with current industry standards.
* Architecture and Design: Lead and/or participate in the definition and documentation of requirements, architecture and design of complex systems, based on knowledge of relevant software technologies being developed and/or used in commercial and scientific communities.
* Software Development: Develop, test, document, deploy and maintain high-quality software, including REST interfaces, command-line interfaces, desktop and mobile clients, and distributed resource integration software.
* Research: Participate in and contribute to research efforts related to the software, including collecting and analyzing data, and writing research papers for journals or conferences.
* Establishes continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines and practices.
* Team Coordination and Professional Development: Maintain a working knowledge of relevant software technologies being developed and/or used in scientific and commercial communities.
* Participate in team coordination and development activities, including project planning, project reporting, recruitment, training new staff, and mentoring junior software developers and students.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:

* Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field, or at least 3 years of professional programming experience required.
* Advanced degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field preferred.

Experience:

Required:

* Experience with Web technologies (e.g. REST, HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX PHP).
* 2-3 years of professional programming experience developing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining RESTful applications with Python.
* Experience in back-end database development (relational, NoSQL, caching) and optimization.
* Experience with HTTP servers (e.g., Apache, NGINX).
* Experience with unit and integration testing tools (e.g., Nose, Jenkins).
* Experience with a distributed version control system (e.g., Git, Mercurial).
* Knowledge of modern JavaScript tools such as Webpack, Babel, ESLint, Gulp, NPM, Bower, Browserify, Grunt and similar technologies.

Preferred:

* Experience with Web security technologies (e.g. SSL/TLS, OAuth2, OpenID Connect and PKI).
* Experience with containers (e.g. Docker, Singularity, Kubernetes).
* Experience with shell scripting (e.g., Bash).
* Experience with Agile (e.g. Scrum) development processes.
* Experience in Cloud Computing (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
* Experience in HPC.
* Experience with Web Services (Python - Flask, Django).
* Experience with AJAX.
* Experience with JSON.
* Experience with JavaScript Frameworks (React, Angular, NodeJS).
* Experience with Relational Databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
