Job Description

This is a full time position based in San Francisco from September 6-December 20, 2019

The modern world runs on the Internet, and the Internet cannot exist without its underlying infrastructure. Meraki makes setting up, managing, and maintaining that infrastructure easier than it has ever been before. Meraki enables connectivity everywhere from neighborhood cafes to education institutions to global hospitality groups operating thousands of sites.

As a Firmware Features Software Engineer at Meraki, you will be responsible for developing and implementing features that improve the reliability, simplicity, and performance of our products. Our Firmware Features teams are focused on improving our existing networking technology and enabling customers to deploy our products in new and innovative ways. You will have the opportunity to work across the stack collaborating with other developers, UX designers, and product management to develop software that spans from device drivers and routing code all the way up to our distributed, cloud-hosted backend. Our projects are driven by technological innovation and developer creativity in addition to market demands, giving you the structure and freedom to pursue projects you are most passionate about. Meraki engineers put the customer experience first, own projects from beginning to end, and are empowered to make impactful decisions.

Meraki believes that the quality of our product is dependent on the quality of our engineers. We place a high value on nurturing the growth and development of everyone on our team. We foster an open and supportive workplace where everybody is given the opportunity to succeed.

Example projects of a Firmware Features Software Engineering Intern:

* SD-WAN Multi-Path: Leverages multiple internet uplinks together with load balancing, high availability, and performance-based routing techniques to afford higher bandwidth, less downtime, and better QoS for VoIP calls

* Motion search: This security camera feature enables users to retroactively search video by region of interest in recorded footage. Cameras process every frame of video at the edge, extract and encode motion metadata, and supply the data to a backend search engine

* Stackable switches: This auto-configured distributed system of two or more L2 & L3 switches allows load-balancing of traffic to achieve high performance throughput, as well as link redundancy for minimizing network downtime upon device failure

You are an outstanding applicant if:

* You are pursuing a technical degree or have equivalent experience with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of computer science

* You are proficient with C/C++ programming languages and demonstrate working knowledge with pointers, memory allocation, and bit shifting

* You have past project or internship experience working with embedded firmware development and/or Linux

* You have familiarity with computer networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, etc.)

* You strive to build rich and dynamic features by expanding current tools or by creating entirely new components

* You can expertly work beyond the boundary of single languages or technologies to identify complex bugs

* You would flourish within a small engineering team and are excited to tackle open-ended problems

Intern/Co-Op Program Overview:

Meraki interns and co-ops join the team for 12 and 16 week programs, respectively, and are placed directly onto subteams. During the program, interns/co-ops have the opportunity to work on a small starter project, such as integration and implementation of new tools, before spending the majority of the program on a larger project, such as building the infrastructure for a new service. Projects are cross functional, which allow insight into new languages and technologies, help encourage professional growth within engineering, and allow a sense of ownership within the team.

Meraki's engineering teams place a high emphasis on mentorship. Each intern and co-op is matched 1:1 with a mentor who provides continual feedback and guidance throughout the duration of the program. Mentors help with introductions to other team members, overviews of tools and processes, and provide a seamless integration into Meraki life.

Intern/Co-Op Benefits:

* Furnished housing in San Francisco for duration of program

* Competitive salary

* Weekly social events inside and outside of the office (Giants games, Exploratorium tickets, friendly soccer games)

* Lunch and dinner daily

* Customized laptop and desk setups

* Medical, dental, and vision coverage plans
